ASTRO America Releases First Annual Report
ASTRO America kicked off the new year with the release of its first annual report highlighting key accomplishments made in 2022 and some of the projects we are continuing to work on in 2023 and beyond. Notable sections include:
- ASTRO OTA – The announcement of an Other Transaction Agreement (OTA) to develop additive and advanced manufacturing technologies for the U.S. Army and what this means for our ongoing work at the Rock Island Arsenal in the Quad Cities – specifically, utilizing the world’s largest metal 3D printer
- Guam Accelerator Project – An update on Phase 1 of our comprehensive study on the economic readiness and capacity for additive manufacturing (AM) in Guam – a project commissioned by the Guam Economic Development Authority (GEDA) under the direction of Guam Governor Lou Leon Guerrero
- AM Forward – The latest on the ASTRO-led program, launched by President Biden along with leading manufacturers last year – including announcements by AM Forward members
- Exciting announcements about new members of the ASTRO team, including Tracie Potts joining our Board of Directors, and more
The report also includes a short essay outlining our outlook on the industry titled, “A Mixed Bag for Manufacturing Policy in 2022,” by Neal Orringer.

ASTRO Begins to Finalize Phase 1 of Guam Accelerator Project
After months of remote research, the ASTRO America team traveled to Guam in November to host an in-person workshop. The event brought together representatives of business, research, higher education, utility/infrastructure, and economic development communities in Guam as well as key U.S. military stakeholders to ensure appropriate input.
This workshop completed the research phase of ASTRO’s “Additive Manufacturing (AM) Feasibility Study,” to determine the viability of industrial 3D printing on this key island.
Now, the team is hard at work writing up a final report and we are excited to share our assessment. From there, we are hopeful to move on to Phase 2, which will include a plan for implementation.

Workshop Coming Up! ASTRO heading to the West Coast…
ASTRO will host a workshop February 7 and 8 in San Diego, CA to connect with developers of ground vehicle systems who are interested in using large-scale metal additive technology. This is the second of three workshops to be carried out under the first project order under the $95 million ASTRO OTA to develop additive and advanced manufacturing technologies for the U.S. Army. The OTA is being carried out under the direction of the United States Army Contracting Command – Detroit Arsenal (ACC-DTA) on behalf of the Combat Capabilities Development Command (CCDC) Ground Vehicle Systems Center (GVSC).
The event is invitation-only and space is limited. A virtual attendee option will also be available. Suitable substitutes are acceptable with prior approval.
